About Me

I am assistant professor, coordinating Textile Design Department for Post Graduate course at Indian Institute of Crafts and Design. This institute was setup with a mandate to create Design Techno Managers for Crafts sector. This institute was setup by the State Government, an initiative towards design education specifically for crafts. In India crafts is the second largest industry after agriculture; it is the way of life for people. In past Crafts was an activity to adorn every-day life for example across different cultures in India when a family was blessed with child, the ladies of the house took it as a task to embroider beautiful textile. These beautiful pieces of textiles some-times took years to complete, also considered status symbol in society.

I am also coordinating the Embroidery Design Bank, a national Government project, by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), New Delhi; we are collecting, analyzing and archiving various traditional embroideries and needle crafts of India. The main mandate is to collect and disseminate traditional knowledge of embroideries. We are putting together a collection representing various styles, patterns, cultural relevance and anecdote of different expressions.

Background

I Post graduated specializing in Water-colour Paintings; and further persuaded Post graduation in Textile Design. This combination gave me a very good sensibility to understand and apply colours. I am now known for my knowledge in textile surface embellishment, both for prints and embroideries. My recent work of Embroidery design bank has taken me to a different level (research)of understanding of embellishments.

My work has always been inspired from Nature; I got a chance to experience the nature, being a mother to a 4 year old gave me a deep insight of beauty of nature. From pregnancy report to the growing experience, to giving a birth, to everyday interaction with my child has really molded my growth and development. In a way I consider this as a big achievement of life.

I am passionate about dance; being an artist has also made me admire dance as a rhythm; the understanding of flow with music. While dancing, I sometimes get so involved that everything fades out and my heart only tends to follow music.

Other than this I am passionate about travelling, visiting different places, meeting people.
